Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in Strasbourg

24 April, 2016

On April 24 a ceremony dedicated to101st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was held in the Republic Square of Strasbourg near the monument “Our Victims”.

Among the attendees were Permanent Representative of Armenia to the Council of Europe Armen Papikyan, Deputy Mayor of Strasbourg, several representatives of non-governmental organizations of Alsace, different churches of Strasbourg and the local Armenian community who paid tribute to the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide.

In his speech, the Permanent Representative of Armenia attached the importance to the efforts for the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, the restoration of historical justice and fight against 100 year denial. In this regard Ambassador Papikyan highlighted the active and unique role of Armenia in the international fight against genocide and crimes against humanity.

The permanent representative also spoke about Azerbaijan's military aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh in early April of this year. In this context, he focused the attention of the participants on the fact that the genocide against Armenians by Ottoman Empire in 1915 is currently repeated in the Middle East by terrorist groups and also few weeks ago against the people and soldiers of Artsakh by Azerbaijani army.

Ambassador Papikyan expressed his deep regret that the international community is not fully conscious of the global risk of gravity caused by the Turkish-Azerbaijani tandem, taking into consideration that the highest authorities of these states promote anti-Armenian denial policy and also the amplifying violations of human rights, freedom of speech, democracy and European values in these countries.

President of the Alsace-Armenia Friendship Charitable Organization Pierre Zulumyan, the Deputy Mayor of Strasbourg, as well as representatives of Jewish, Kurdish and Rwandan organizations also delivered speeches.

In his speech, Deputy Mayor Navel Rafik-Elmrini reaffirming the unconditional friendship with Armenia and Armenian people, particularly noted the unacceptability of the denial of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey, since it unfortunately undermines the possibility of reconciliation nurturing new crimes against humanity throughout the world.
