The visit of PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs for Armenia to Yerevan

On May 12, the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan received the PACE monitoring co-rapporteurs for Armenia Alan Meale and Giuseppe Galati. The parties discussed the process of implementation by Armenia of the commitments assumed with the accession to the Council of Europe, reforms carried out in our country, as well as the forthcoming programs. Serzh Sargsyan expressed confidence that Armenia will implement properly the Armenia-CE Plan of Action for 2015-2018 which officially kicks off on May 21.

The co-rapporteurs praised progress which has become noticeable in Armenia thanks to the reforms, expressed gratitude to the President of Armenia for his efforts to move forward democratic processes in Armenia and assured that the Council of Europe encourages the taken steps and anticipates continued success in this area.

The parties spoke also about the recent escalation in the NK conflict zone, which resulted from the ceasefire violation, and discussed possibilities of resuming the peace process.

During their visit, Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan also received the co-rapporteurs. Armenia’s premier welcomed the co-rapporteurs’ visit to Armenia, highlighted cooperation with the PACE monitoring committee and thanked them for the technical aid to Armenia. Mr Abrahamyan gave the PACE rapporteurs detailed information about the debates on Armenia’s draft election law and about the results.

Speaking of the four-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh in early April, the Prime minister has noted that the Armenian sides’ position is clear: the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict must be settled within the OSCE Minsk Group, by means of peaceful negotiations.
The co-rapporteurs thanked Armenia’s premier for a warm reception and stated their support for Armenia’s democratic development.

Members of RA National Delegation to PACE also met with Co-Rapporteurs of PACE Monitoring Committee on Armenia. Welcoming the co-rapporteurs, the Head of the RA National Delegation to PACE Hermine Naghdalyan thanked them for effective cooperation and the work done in strengthening democracy in Armenia. In this context Mrs Naghdalyan highlighted the importance of full implementation of Armenia-CoE 2015-2018 Action Plan. The co-rapporteur Alan Meale assured that they would continue their contribution to the processes of development of Armenia’s democracy.
