The 109th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was commemorated in Strasbourg

A commemoration ceremony dedicated to the 109^th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was held at ‘’To our deads’’ monument in the Place de la République in Strasbourg.

H.E. Arman Khachatryan, the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Armenia to the CoE, Jeanne Barseghyan, the Mayor of Strasbourg, several representatives of the City Hall, of Council of elders, as well as of Armenian community were present at the commemoration ceremony.

Wreath laying ceremony was followed with a moment of silence to pay tribute to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

In his speech Ambassador Khachatryan highlighted the continuous efforts made by Armenia for the international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide. The consistent role of France in this context was emphasized by the Ambassador. He noted the importance of the commitment of Armenia for prevention of genocides and the steps undertaken in this regard. H.E. Khachatryan added that impunity is a solid foundation for new serious atrocities, including perpetration of ethnic cleansings as it happened with the Armenians of Nagorno Karabakh when more than 100.000 of our compatriots were forcibly displaced by Azerbaijan.

Jeanne Barseghyan, the Mayor of Strasbourg, Rev. Fr. Archimandrite Komitas Hovnanyan, as well as leaders of the Armenian community organisations delivered speeches during the ceremony.
