Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in Strasbourg

On April 24, an event dedicated to the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide took place near the monument “Our victims” in the Republic Square, Strasbourg. Ambassador Armen Papikyan, Permanent representative of Armenia to the Council of Europe, Mrs. Nawel Rafik-Elmrini Deputy Mayor of Strasbourg, Mr. Robert Herrmann, President of Strasbourg Eurometropole, members of the Armenian delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of CoE, as well as representatives of Alsace NGO’s and Armenian community attended the event and paid tribute to the memory of innocent victims of the Genocide. In his speech Ambassador Armen Papikyan stressed out the essence of commemoration and the messages which it delivers to the international community. “This date gives us an opportunity to review events which took place 100 years ago and to reconfirm our commitment to multiply efforts of international community for preventing genocides and crimes against humanity throughout the world. No more genocides. Recognize, condemn and prevent. These are the messages of the Centennial.”
Deputy Mayor of Strasbourg, President of Strasbourg Eurometropole, President of “Alsace-Armenia friendship” charity organization Pierre Zulumian, representatives of Jewish, Kurdish and Rwandan communities also delivered speeches. Earlier that day representatives of Armenian community of Strasbourg held a public procession to the Consulate General of Turkey, European Parliament, European Court of Human Rights and Council of Europe. They laid a wreath in front of the Armenian flag at the CoE headquarters.
On April 24, Strasbourg “Voix de Stas” orchestra made a performance in Old Saint Peter’s Church. Permanent representative of Armenia Armen Papikyan made opening remarks. Ambassadors, diplomats of the member states of CoE, Commisioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks, members of the Secretariat of the CoE, Deputy Mayor of Strasbourg, President of Strasbourg Eurometropole, board members of Alsace division of the Ministry of Culture of France and representatives of the Armenian community were present at the evening.
