Remarks by Ambassador Khachatryan at the Committee of Ministers on January 17

During the discussion of political issues Ambassador Arman Khachatryan, the Permanent Representative of Armenia to the CoE, briefed the Committee of Ministers on the recent statements made by the Azerbaijani political leadership, emphasizing that they can seriously undermine the peace process.

Ambassador noted that the bellicose rhetoric of Azerbaijan, reneging on the agreements reached and making new demands to Armenia do not contribute to the establishment of peace and stability in the region. Ambassador called on the Committee of the Ministers to be consistent and take concrete steps to deter Azerbaijan from further worsening the situation in the region.

In his remarks Ambassador Khachatryan also referred to the report on the human rights situation published by Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović following her visit to Armenia, Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh. In this regard Ambassador emphasized that Mijatović's records clearly expose Azerbaijan's unfounded allegations regarding the circumstances of the blockade of Lachin corridor and forcibly displacement of Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Ambassador Khachatryan reaffirmed Armenia's commitment to establishing lasting peace in the region based on previously agreed principles.
